Bunions Q & A

What are bunions?

A bunion is a bony protrusion that develops at the base of the big toe. Bunions are a type of deformity that occurs when the bones in the front of your foot shift out of alignment. As the big toe pulls toward the smaller toes, it causes the joint at the base of the big toe to stick out.

What causes bunions?

There are a number of issues that can contribute to the development of bunions.

In many cases, genetics plays a major role in determining your risk for bunions. Inherited foot problems like flat feet, abnormal bone structure, or loose tendons can all increase your risk of bunions.

Other issues like repetitive stress, injuries, and improper footwear can also increase stress and pressure on your toes, resulting in bunions.

Factors like obesity and occupations that require long periods of standing or walking can also increase your risk of bunions.

What are the symptoms of bunions?

The most obvious symptom of a bunion is a bony bump at the base of your big toe. Additional symptoms include:

  • Difficulty moving the big toe
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Redness
  • Corns or calluses

Bunions can be painful and make it difficult to walk or go about your normal activities. They can also lead to other foot problems like ingrown toenails, hammertoe, and overlapping toes.
